The record-breaking 45,000 km EcoFuel World Tour which started in Europe in October 2006 will arrive in Sydney on the 20th February 2007. This is the first natural gas-powered automobile to attempt a Guinness Book World Record trip through five continents without interruption or returning to the starting point. The EcoFuel-powered, 80 kW, 2.0-litre Volkswagen Caddy is highlighting the advantages of natural gas as an environmentally friendly and economical alternative to petrol or diesel.
Endress+Hauser, the global supplier of process automation solutions, is a co-sponsor of the EcoFuel World Tour. The company works closely with researchers and developers of alternative eco-friendly fuels and is a major supplier of measurement instrumentation and solutions for the oil and gas industry. "As a company, we are aware of our responsibility regarding the environment. Using natural gas as a fuel makes perfect sense. This is why we gladly support the EcoFuel World Tour,” says John Immelman, Managing Director, Endress+Hauser Australia.
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is considered an environmentally clean alternative to petrol or diesel fuel. In Australia, CNG has established its credentials as an alternative transport energy source based upon its superior environmental performance in terms of exhaust emissions and the availability of abundant natural gas reserves. CNG is made by compressing methane (90% of natural gas is made up of methane) extracted from natural gas.
Endress+Hauser have developed a new Coriolis flowmeter - CNGmass - for refuelling CNG-powered vehicles. When it comes to billing and paying for the amount of CNG actually pumped, the measuring accuracy at the dispenser is just as important as with any other fuel. Endress+Hauser's CNGmass is the brain in the CNG dispenser. This flowmeter measures the mass of fuel transferred from dispenser to vehicle with consistent reliability and high accuracy of ±0.5 of reading. The compact and robust CNGmass comes with ATEX, FM and IEC Ex approvals and is available in two sizes - DN 15 for refuelling passenger cars and DN 25 for trucks and buses.
The Volkswagen Caddy EcoFuel, which entered Australia through Darwin, will travel to Alice Springs, Mt Isa, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney and leave Australia at Melbourne. As co-sponsor, Endress+Hauser will be arranging a media day on the 20th February allowing media representatives and selected clients the opportunity to speak with EcoFuel Tour leader Rainer Zietlow. Additional interviews can be arranged during the stopover in Sydney.
