Promass Coriolus for refined tallow measurement?

Peerless, an established manufacturer of quality edible oils, fats and margarines, supplying to food manufacturers, caterers, restaurants and bakers throughout Australia and overseas, has recently installed a number of Endress+Hauser Promass Coriolis mass flowmeters as part of their continued striving for improved efficiencies.

In 1984 the company diversified its operation from recycling and rendering meat products, by establishing a modern, automated, state-of-the-art edible oil refinery.  The refinery has the flexibility to process edible oils in the most efficient way through alkali refining or physical refining, with no effluent by -products.

It was at this stage that the works manager of Peerless, Fred Wuthrich, implemented the first Endress+Hauser m-Point flowmeter.  Despite skepticism from the market, the device was installed on refined tallow measurement and has worked faultlessly ever since.

In the CIP plant, Promag 33 electromagnetic flowmeters are used to manage the CIP cycle with Liquiphant M level switches monitoring the high and Low levels of the caustic and other tanks, while Promass 63Ms control the flow of oils to the evaporators.  These devices were chosen for their renowned accuracy and repeatability.

More recently a Promass 63I has been installed for accurately filling 10 to 25 kg buckets of shortening margarine.  The Promass I was selected for cleanability due to its single pipe construction.

Level measurement in the milk and whey storage tanks is performed using the  Deltapilot DB50H.

In these natural product applications, hygiene is a critical factor, and the Deltapilots satisfy the very highest standards including EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering Design Group) and 3A.  To minimise the chance of moisture ingress, Peerless has selected the remote sensor version, and mounted the transmitter away from rapid temperature changes.

Peerless also uses a vast selection of Liquiphant level switches for point control on the storage and process tanks.

A particularly difficult application was on the tallow/water mix at 90-95oC where reliable switching at various product densities was critical to the process.

Today, with over 50 Endress+Hauser flowmeters, and in excess of 200 level switches, Peerless has perfected the art of continuous process in a traditional batching industry thereby reducing production costs and improving time-to-market.

Peerless has a history of implementing leading edge technologies since this gives them a commercial advantage.  The company is continually striving for increased efficiencies, lowest cost of production and believes that ongoing optimisation is the key to their success.  Says Fred Wuthrich, works manager, "by teaming up with a select number of preferred instrumentation and control vendors, like Endress+Hauser, we can partner in implementing the latest global measuring technologies, giving us an advantage in the market.  Without an open and trusting team approach, we would not have achieved these positive results."
